Other Cultures Reflections and Multilingualism in Postmodern French Narrative

Abstract

This article analyses a representative corpus of multilingualism´s manifestations in the last decade of the twentieth and twenty first centuries French novel. It also analyses the interest shown by some authors in other cultures. The study establishes the typology of the different uses of literary multilingualism present in postmodern French novel. There is also a focus on the multiple functions of multilingual terms and its contributions to contemporary French literature. Finally, it analyses the special relevance of multilingualism in the presentation of a pluralistic and multicultural world in the most current literature, as well as the presence of specific narrative languages, characteristical of the hypermodernity’s realities. El presente artículo analiza un corpus representativo de manifestaciones del plurilingüismo en la novela francesa de la última década del siglo XX y en la novela francesa del siglo XXI así como el interés que algunos autores muestran por otras culturas. El estudio establece la tipología de los diferentes empleos del plurilingüismo literario presentes en la novela francesa postmoderna. Asimismo, se analizan las diversas funciones del uso de términos plurilingües, y sus aportaciones a la literatura francesa contemporánea. Por último, se aborda la especial relevancia que el plurilingüismo adquiere en la presentación de una visión plural y multicultural del mundo, en la literatura más actual, así como la presencia de lenguajes narrativos específicos propios de las realidades de la hipermodernidad.
