Abstract

We present a fi le written in Amatitlan, a town which was part of the Bishopric of Guadalajara.The fi le contains three texts, one written in Nahuatl by the confriers and the indigenous authorities ofAmatitlan, and two more written in Spanish by their vicar. Considering the three texts, it is possible toreconstruct the confl ict emerged due to the fact that the confriers, without asking the vicar for permissions,took forty pesos from the confraternity funds and sent a music master to Michoacán, to buy abassoon and chirimías. Such a decision irritates the vicar. He then writes to the bishop, informing himabout the confriers’ disobedience, which has become habitual, as understood from what he explains.The analysis focuses on the Nahuatl text, on the confriers’ argumentation about the decision to spendthe money on the instruments. It is based on the use of deictic elements, logical operators and the typeof Spanish loans found in the text. Presentamos un expediente elaborado en Amatitlan, pueblo del obispado de Guadalajara. Elexpediente está conformado por tres textos, uno en náhuatl, escrito por los cofrades y las autoridadesde Amatitlan, dos más en español, escritos por su vicario. Entre los tres textos se reconstruye el confl ictosurgido a raíz de que los cofrades, sin avisar al vicario, tomaron cuarenta pesos de la caja de la cofradía,y enviaron a un maestro de música a Michoacán a comprar un bajón y chirimías.
