Resumen : In this article we focus on the character of the translator-interpreter (ἑρμηνεύς) as recorded by Herodotus and Xenophon, in order to study the different types of oral translations achieved between Greeks and barbarians in Ancient East. Although our analysis is limited to these two sources, we think in our work are for the first time examined the ways in which such activity was practiced. Here we consider how testimonies of Herodotus and Xenophon have contributed to define the main lines and types of oral translations used by the interpreters, according to the situations in which their services were required.
