Mujeres “viriles”: el caso de La Rumba de Micrós

Abstract

In this essay the changing feminine identities manifested in Mexican literature at the end of the 19th century are examined, oscillating between the archetypes of the fragile woman and the femme fatal, above all due to the romantic tradition and then the modernistic. The realism of traditionalism and naturalism works from this base, although with a new focus. Special attention is given to the character of Rumba, from the novel of the same name by the writer Ángel de Campo (Micrós), for its virile characterization which breaks with dominant forms, even though it continues subordinate to a misogynist vision.
